Position Type: Part-Time | Community Outreach & Field Organizing

MI Poder is seeking energetic, people-centered, and community-driven Canvassers to support year-round civic engagement, voter outreach, leadership development, and community organizing across Michigan. This role is a frontline outreach position focused on building relationships, increasing civic participation, and connecting residents to organizing campaigns, advocacy efforts, and leadership opportunities.

Canvassers play an important role in supporting the Michigan Latino Voter Project, MI Poder’s statewide initiative to strengthen Latino civic engagement, voter participation, and long-term community power. They also help support outreach and turnout for MI Poder’s annual Latino Legislative Advocacy Day and other statewide civic engagement efforts.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys talking with people, building trust in the community, and helping neighbors become more informed, connected, and engaged.

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct door-to-door outreach and voter engagement conversations in assigned turf areas.
  • Engage residents around voting, civic participation, public issues, leadership opportunities, and community concerns.
  • Support voter registration, issue identification, persuasion, and GOTV efforts.
  • Conduct deep canvassing and relational organizing conversations rooted in listening and relationship-building.
  • Help recruit volunteers, trusted messengers, members, and community participants into MI Poder programs.
  • Assist with literature drops, petition collection, survey outreach, and community education.
  • Participate in community events, outreach tables, neighborhood engagement activities, and public actions.
  • Support turnout operations during election cycles and advocacy campaigns.
  • Assist with implementation of the Michigan Latino Voter Project in assigned communities.
  • Conduct voter outreach through canvassing, texting, phonebanking, and community engagement.
  • Build respectful relationships with residents and represent MI Poder professionally in the community.
  • Support outreach for Latino Legislative Advocacy Day, including recruitment, mobilization, and event preparation.
  • Accurately record outreach and voter contact data using VAN, EveryAction, MiniVAN, ThruTalk/Text, Google Forms, and related tools.
  • Track daily outreach metrics and follow assigned turf, goals, and organizing procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interest in civic engagement, organizing, advocacy, or community leadership.
  • Comfortable engaging directly with community members and having face-to-face conversations.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable walking outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Experience working within Latino, immigrant, Indigenous, bilingual, and/or working-class communities preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

What We Offer

  • Job Classification:, FLSA - non-exempt position
  • Job Length: At-will┃Temporary: July 7- August 4, 2026 and/or  September 22- November 3, 2026
  • Compensation: $21/hour for English speakers; $23/hour for English/Spanish speakers
  • Work Schedule: 20- 30 hours/week. Flexible schedule with evening and weekend responsibilities during campaign periods needed
  • Location: Hybrid in Grand Rapids, Flint, Pontiac, or Detroit
